Isi artikel
One feature of Lacandon Maya communal rituals is the brewing and drinking of the alcoholic beverage balche. This drink is often consumed until the drinker becomes nauseated, and a special song called Lak Chan-eh Little Wife may be sung in an attempt to prevent the singer from vomiting. In this song the drink is symbolically represented as a woman, and consumption of balche is referred to in sexual terms such as desiring and embracing this woman. This paper focuses on the historical and mythological background of this ritual symbol, presenting the argument that the sacred drink is metaphorically represented as a woman because it is made from honey, which has a traditional symbolic link with women and sexuality in Amerindian mythology. Using the work of Levi-Strauss, this analysis then demonstrates how honey functions as an important symbolic operator not only in Lacandon ritual, but throughout the mythology of the aboriginal peoples of the New World.
