Isi artikelThis paper examines the variation in the pragmatic ambiguity of two linguistic form classes, personal pronouns and plural markers, whose elements are defined in their quintessentially pragmatic relations to interactional contexts. Moving beyond the focus on pronouns and verbs in the literature on pragmatics, the study, first of all, highlights the significance of the consideration of contextual presuppositions and implications in the analysis of the meanings and use of another class of lexical units. Secondly, the study suggests that the greater ambiguity in the pragmatic relations of Vietnamese personal pronouns to the contexts of their usages than in those of plural markers is rooted in the syntactical function of Vietnamese plural markers in the grammatical system.
