The large proverb inventories found in some Old World cultures meet complex communicational needs. Pile sorting of fifty Arabic proverbs by twenty young males in Lebanon yielded hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling solutions showing that on the basis of obvious meanings proverbs can be fitted into a taxonomy and mapped into semantic space. The untested hypothesis is offered that proverbs are used in buffered communication to transmit advice and guidance across various lines of authority.
