An orthography is presented for recording laughter, and a sample of American and Zotzil laughter is analyzed. An argument is presented for considering laughter as a relational expression encoding individuality, degree of self-consciousness, (primarily through vowel selection) and intensity (through aspiration, glottalization, loudness, and duration). Laughter is found to be non-phonemic and multiple-track (like music) rather than lineal (like phoneme's).
