Abstract
The Secret Life of Bees, a novel which is sold over 5 million copies worldwide and published in more than 23 languages, is one of the novels with good themes. It is a work of Sue Monk Kidd, an author from Sylvester, Georgia. In her first novel, she successfully combines a tragic story with her sense of humor which is quite rare in literature field. The story itself is about Lily Owens who has grown up believing she accidently killed her mother when she was just four years old. Now, at fourteen, she yearns for forgiveness and a mother’s love. Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her father, her only friend is Rosaleen, a black servant. When racial tension explodes one summer afternoon, and Rosaleen is arrested and beaten, Lily is compelled to act. She decides to run away with Rosaleen and follows a trail left by her mother who had died ten years before. Finding sanctuary in the home of three beekeeping sisters, Lily starts a journey as much about her understanding of the world, as much about the mystery surrounding her mother.
