Isi artikelThe understanding of teacher stress requires valid and reliable assessment tools. Reliable instruments allow the detecting of existing relationships among components of the teacher stress process, and valid instruments allow meaningful interpretations of these relationships. In teacher stress research, the development of assessment tools has made tremendous progress, from a single item rating of perceived stressfulness of being a teacher (e.g., Kyriacou & Sutcliffe, 1978) to multi dimensional descriptions of the stress process, differentiating stressors or adverse job environmental conditions, appraisal of and coping with these conditions, and stress responses, manifestations, symptoms, and burnout (e.g. Fimian, 1984; Pettegrew & Wolf, 1982). However, the multi dimensional assessment of teacher stress process would have remained largely descriptive had it not received its impetus from advances in multivariate data analytic procedures uncovering components of the stress process in a pattern of relationships. Specifically, the explication of relationships among these component variables is no longer confined to simple bivariate con-elations between, for example. sources of stress and psychological symptoms (e.g. Kyriacou & Pratt, 1985).
