Isi artikel
This article tries to understand the processes of forging identity through cultural practices, particularly those related to reading experiences. In order to do so, it focuses on a 19th-century Brazilian community of readers and their practices regarding the formation and use of libraries, the publication of literary reviews, books and newspapers, and the definition of reading canons. Then, in comparison with the larger Brazilian society, it tries to establish patterns of cultural definitions of local identity.
