The Factors Affecting Nutritional Status of The College Students of Atma Jaya, Observed from The Body Image Aspect

Background. As a developing country, Indonesia is suffering from nutritional problem, both undernutrition and overnutrition. The adolescence period is a period of human growth so that good nutrition prevents problems in this period. Many factors affect adolescents’ nutritional status, such as sex, daily intake, physical activity, body image, and stress. We will observe the factors from the body image aspect.
Objective. To know the prevalence of nutritional status of college students of Atma Jaya Catholic University and the factors affecting nutritional status of the college students of Atma Jaya, observed from the body image aspect.
Theory. This research is based on the theory developed by Virgianto in 2005, stating that The Factors Affecting Nutritional Status are daily intake, physical activity, body image, and stress,
Methods. The respondents are 147 of the college students of Atma Jaya Catholic University. Three of them were excluded. The respondents were interviewed then their body weights and heights were measured.
Result. This research showed that the factors affecting the nutritional status are sex, daily intake, physical activity, and body image. Body image has correlations with daily intake, nutritional status, and sex, but not with physical activity or stress.
Conclusion. The prevalence of nutritional status in Atma Jaya medical faculty : the majority has normal nutritional status (70,83%), followed by overnutrition (20,14%), dan undernutrition (9,03%). The factors affecting the nutritional status are sex, daily intake, physical activity, and body image. Body image correlates with daily intake, nutritional status,and sex, but not with physical activity or stress.
Advice. We advice that the faculty offers more activities promoting healthy nutritional status for the college students and more facilities for sports, and seminars to increase knowledge of having good nutritional status.
