Abstract
One of the final requirements of the completion of Sarjana degree (equal to Bachelor degree) in the English Department, Faculty of Education, Atma Jaya University states students' getting teaching experiences conducted through real and stimulated teaching sessions. To meet that objective student teachers enrolling in Microteaching and Practice teaching classes are obliged to teach in campus or secondary schools while being evaluated by the school teachers and university supervisor. This evaluation is referred in this research report as "Teaching Observation". The fundamental element required in the observation is the criteria which specify the teaching performance outcome expected from the candidate teachers. Even though criteria do exist for the observation in micro-teaching and practice teaching classes and have been used for years, they are not standardized, and do not comprehensively accommodate the effective teaching features and the specific teaching context where the teaching acts occur. In addition to that, they are far from being compatible to the need of novel teachers in Microteaching and Practice Teaching classes. Considering that without definite criteria, the objectives of the observation activities in both classes are not possible to be accomplished, this study attempts to revise and reconstruct the existing criteria in the English Department. In the process of designing the new observation criteria, the present criteria are properly revised and adjusted on the bases of three essential factors: (1) feedback of the three parties involved in the pre-service teaching program (i.e. novel teachers, school mentor, and university supervisors), the data of which is initially collected; (2) experts' theory on effective teaching, and (3) two existing models of observation criteria by Brown (2001) and the Directorate General of Higher Learning in Indonesia (2006).
