Isi artikelThis article seeks to introduce the important work of Maurizio Lazzarato to an Englishspeaking audience, focussing in particular on his appropriation of Bergsonism to forge a metaphysics of contemporary capitalism and of resistance to capitalism. In order to grasp Lazzarato’s concern with the post-Fordist experience of time and the subversive potentials of its manipulation through the technologies of cinema and video, it tries to contextualise his stance in terms of a heretical post-workerist tradition forged in an Italian Marxist milieu in the 1970s, looking in particular at the notion of an autonomy or primacy of resistance, and at Lazzarato’s pioneering work on immaterial labour and cooperation. Delving into Lazzarato’s philosophical references (Nietzsche, Benjamin, Deleuze), it identifies an antidialectical, vitalist overcoming of the Marxist analysis of capitalism as the core of Lazzarato’s most recent work and interrogates its ability to generate a concept of abstraction capable of capturing the character of political economy and the stakes of anti-capitalist politics.
