Isi artikelIn the earliest days of social work, women social workers took on the interstitial and assistant roles to men in hospitals, schools, Charity Organization Societies, and other settings. After several decades, these new practitioners, by now equipped with training schools and organizations, decided that they were here to stay and were worthy of the respect that the term professional provided. The premier expert on professions, Abraham Flexner, was invited to speak to the National Conference on Charities and Corrections in 1915. His topic was “Is Social Work a Profession?”
