Borges’ quote attributed to ‘a certain Chinese encyclopaedia entitled Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge’ turns out to correspond to the general idea of the ancient Chinese about ‘the myriad of things’. What Borges quotes about the classification of animals exhibits the self-manifestation of natural things not yet subjected to any artificial taxonomy – a kind of ‘natural indistinction’. The apparent chaotic classification that Borges quotes signifies, conversely, that the natural order cannot be put into any preestablished taxonomy.
