Isi artikelMost research done by Korean scholars unquestioningly assumed that theories from the west, especially those derived from Cultural Studies models and approaches, would be useful for analysing Korean contexts. However, what is the significance of Cultural Studies for a society like South Korea? This commentary problematizes the uncritical deployment of western cultural theory in Korean contexts and argues that what is needed is not ‘indigenous national theories’ but rather original research questions within and in the interest of local contexts.
