Working with death often results in personal distancing from confronting mortality. This article examines the negotiation of professional and personal experiences with death. Losing a beloved elderly neighbor exposes how being female, single, elderly, childless, and poor makes the dying person vulnerable to the cold harshness of the medicalization of death.
