In this piece, Simmel notes that individuals both exist as unities with a certain intrinsic being and parts of one or many wholes that exist outside of them. The person experiences both an inner centredness and either a positive or negative relationship to a totality. However, Simmel points out that it is important to highlight the difference between the concept of individuality prevalent in ‘Romanic peoples’ and the concept of individuality that has abounded in the ‘Germanic world’. Whereas in ‘Romanic contexts’ all human figures and characters are suffused by a more general ideal sphere, in Germanic contexts individuality is sought only with a ‘unique self’. Simmel also observes that in Kant’s teaching both these conceptions are combined, and in the categorical imperative Kant undermines the ‘Germanic conception of the individual’ in expressing a philosophical thesis where the value of individuality exists only by dint of its dispersion into something general.
