Isi artikel
Here, Simmel claims that German intellectual history shows that the ideal German is the ‘complete German’ and at the same time its other, its supplement. In his view, the ‘German essence’ involves a yearning, a reaching out beyond home. In this way both Hölderlin and Hegel are quintessential German figures, in that both express a German craving for antithesis, where everything seeks its opposite and only in becoming its opposite does each thing come to completion. According to Simmel, this seems to demonstrate the origins of German individualism, that Germans yearn to distinguish themselves from others by drawing on an unlimited plethora of materials and possibilities of individual life.
