Isi artikel
In this piece Simmel observes that in Rome a fortunate merging of human purposeful structures with a new unintentional beauty seems to achieve its highest appeal. The force of this appeal, he suggests, emerges from a reconciled distance between the arbitrariness of the parts and the aesthetic sense of the whole. In this way, Rome stands as a complete organic unity, and as such an art work of the highest order. Here, each cultural element and each separate time period converge into a presentness and a togetherness – an overarching unity that is Rome. Rome, Simmel concludes, can be interpreted in many ways whilst at the same time remaining the one Rome. In this way Rome corresponds to the life principle itself.
