Stigma, as Erving Goffman describes it, arises when an attribute creates a discreditable gap between our actual social identity-who we think we objectively are-and our "virtual social identity"-how we are seen by others. The smoker in my story has accepted that a trait, innocuous in many circumstances, would,in this particular social setting, be a stain on his character.
