Isi artikel
Conflicts, crises, and disasters continue to occur with unprecedented scope and destruction both abroad and closer to home. The first anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters to befall the United States, hurricanes Katrina and Rita, has just passed. The media have abounded with reports of the ongoing efforts, struggles, successes, and failures to survive and reconstruct lives that were rent apart and families who were rendered homeless by the wind, rain, and flooding. My thoughts, like those of many of Affilia editors and readers, are focused on the women survivors. This editorial reflects my personal and professional responses to the television images and newspaper articles about women who survived the hurricanes, predominantly African American women, often elderly and many with children.
