Isi artikelThe main purpose of this study was to compare the communication clarity and teaching strategies of finnish mothers and fathers with their school - aged children. Twenty five mothers and 25 fathers with their 8 to 10 years old sons served as participants. The behaviour of the parent, child pairs was videotaped in two tasks, an information conveying task and a teaching task. An additional goal of this study was to investigate the interrelations of parental behaviour across the two tasks. The results rebealed that mothers and father did not differ in their clarity of communication. THey however, manifested somewhat different types of communication deviances while conveying information to their child. Fathers appeared to be more demanding than fathers to use strategies that placed low cognitive demands upon the child. Parents did not, however differ in the use of medium or high level strategies. Correlational analyses revealed some consistency in the way in which parents interacted with their children in different tasks.
