Abstract
The objective of the study is to examine to what extent the implementation of the
Competency-Based Curriculum in teaching reading in Senior High School. The
study also examines the effect of the 1994 curriculum and whether there are
changes in teaching English for Senior High School. This research also attempts
to determine whether the students achieve the goal of teaching-learning processes
and what skills the students have mastered.
Three types of objective tests-multiple choice, true-false, and matchingwere
used to measure or evaluate the students’ competences. This research used
three genres. Each genre consists of five multiple choice, five true-false and five
pairs of matching. The researcher also distributed questionnaires to the teachers
and students in SMA DAMAI. 162 students took part in the evaluation and filled
out the questionnaires. The two teachers also filled out the questionnaires related
to the curriculum and the process of teaching learning activities in the classroom.
The results indicate that the students have not attained all the competencies
taught and expected by the teachers. The teachers also tend to teach according to
the 1994 curriculum where the teachers dominate the class activities. They did so
because they did not have enough understanding of the CBC.
