The number of poor people deprived of their basic education rights remains very large. Southern Asia has the greatest number of poor people (522 million) living on less than US$ 1 a ay. Low levels of literacy and life skills contribute to the perpetuation of poverty. Hence, literacy and education are important elemnts in poverty reduction strategies.
