This paper demonstrates that linguistic information about Brazilian Portuguese words with African etyma provides useful new insights to anthropologists and colleagues in related fields. Even at the lexical level, a study of the provenance of these words in Africa, the area of use in Brazil and the semantic categories they represent supplies an important new source of data for anthropological and historical research.
