Isi artikel
The relationship between voiced and voiceless vowels is a complex issue. I account for part of the data with a rule that devoices a vowel followed by /h/ or Is/. The rule's generality is limited by a stridency condition and by a consecutive syllable constraint. I then discuss three types of exceptions to this rule. Two are only apparent, explainable by rule ordering, but the third is a true exception whose effect is to pre- serve an important distinction in narratives.
