The use of French kinship terms in the Swahili of Southern Zaire is a phenomenon which cannot be fully explained in terms of necessity and/or prestige. In addition to showing that what is mainly at work is a tendency toward associating these lexical items with the slang end of the formal/slang cline, the paper also provides a formal analysis of the sociolinguistic variables controlling the use in conversation of the relevant Swahili, French or innovative terms.
