Isi artikelThis performance piece is based on real people and the author’s interactions with them at different points in his life. Each of the characters is a complex blending of what some might call East and West and what others might call modern and nonmodern. In this sense, it is a piece from and about the interstices, the borders. The characters are chosen explicitly because of their invisibility in much of contemporaryAmerican academic and popular culture. In each act, the worldview that emerges from each character challenges commonly held assumptions about race, gender, class, and nationality. The author seeks to interrogate how most social science research categorizes, universalizes, and generalizes human experience, knowledge, and cosmology. It is a piece that calls for hope, peace, respect, and responsibility at a time when all are sorely lacking.
