Isi artikel
The Classic Mayas used pictures of deity heads, each with one or more characteristic features, to represent the numbers 1 -13. The number 1 head, for example, has characteristics of the Moon Goddess, who is called "mother" by the Mayans. The Proto-Cholan (Mayan) word for fipst is nab and for mothep na?, so it looks as if Mayans used this particular head to suggest a rebus connection. Martha Macri has shown similar connections for all of the numbers. It is argued here that if one compares Mixe-Zoquean words for characteristics pertaining to the Maya head variant glyphs with Mixe-Zoquean names for the corresponding numbers, just as good rebus possibilities --and even better in some cases --exis,t for these non-Mayan languages which have descended in all probability from the language of the Olmecs. This suggests that the Olmecs donated a system of writing to the Maya, and perhaps even dominated them for a while.
