Isi artikel
Six of the nine United States citizens that were voted as starters in the 2005 NBA All-Star Game did not compete for the U.S. men’s basketball team at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Although Allen Iverson, LeBron James, and Tim Duncan competed for the team that won the bronze medal, other NBA superstars including Vince Carter, Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Tracy McGrady declined invitations to play. Because the Olympic team was missing many of the best NBA players, the United States suffered its first Olympic defeat since NBA players were allowed to compete at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The team also lost highly contested games to Argentina and the former Soviet Union satellite, Lithuania. Perhaps the U.S. team and basketball officials could have benefited from looking back at the bizarre circumstances that led to the U.S.men’s basketball team’s first loss to the Soviet Union in international competition. Overshadowed by the loss to the Soviet teams at the 1972 and 1988 Olympic Games, the debacle at the 1959 World Basketball Championships illustrate how basketball serves as a marker for international attitudes and perceptions of the United States.
