Isi artikelResearch into sport labor migration is in its relative infancy. If we are tomatchthe progressmade inotherareas of inquiry inthe sociology of sport, thenmuchmorework needs to be done, both at a conceptual level and with regard to empirical inquiry. The work conducted so far, whatever itsmerits, has only scratched the surface and should be seen as a symptom of a beginning. Here, I includemy work and joint work conducted with colleagues. Given the need to build a solid social scientific stock of knowledge, new research conducted in this area must be welcomed. Thus, the work on association football labor migration by Jeanrenaud and Kesenne (1999); Lanfranchi and Taylor (2001);Maguire, Jarvie,Mansfield, and Bradley (2002);Maguire and Pearton (2000a, 2000b);McGovern (2000, 2002); Moorhouse (1999); and Szymanski (1999) has proven to be useful additions to our understanding of the processes involved. In addition, labor migration research is gaining attention in Japan (Chiba, 2001; Kudo, Nogawa, & Kudo, 2003). This area of study has also proved increasingly attractive to journalists. Although they have not added a great deal to what we already know, some of their anecdotal evidence offers glimpses into the lives of particular migrants (Reng, 2003).
