Isi artikel
In this study, speech codes in a rural southern Louisiana community are analyzed in terms of social and linguistic variables. It is demonstrated that language change and variation permeate all levels of analysis with English and French influencing one another in varying degrees. Cases of integration, code-switching and interference are found in all codes spoken in the community. A speaker's selection among phonological, syntactic and semantic variables is shown to be based on certain social and linguistic constraints operating on these speech codes of southern Louisiana.
