Isi artikel
Two slightly different phonetic systems are used by speakers of the Montana Gros Ventre (Atsina) language. One form is used largely by women, the other by men. The two systems were first reported by Flannery in 1946; the present paper, based on recent fieldwork, looks at the phenomenon anew, and explores the question of why use of the two systems is not entirely predictable from the gender of the speaker.
