Isi artikelInduced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are one of the hottest topics in medicine today. Expectations are rising for the use of iPS cells in regenerative medicine, and research is being carried out aggressively. Professor Yamanaka Shin'ya's team led the world in successfully creating iPS cells-also commonly known in Japan as "universal cells" -in November of last year, and Japan's national government has put together urgent funding of 10 billion (yuan) to push iPS cell research forward. How long will it be before regenerative treatments using iPS cells are available to patients who are eagerly awaiting them? And how do Japan's research efforts measure up in this global competitin? We visited the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, located in a corner of Kyoto University Hospital, to ask Professor Yamanaka for his views on the current situation.
