Classical studies of interlingual borrowing frequently assume that borrowing is the result of gaps in the lexicon of the borrowing language. Evidence presented here shows that in fact borrowing may not be instrumental in this gap-filling sense, so much as poetic, stylistic or creative. This study investigates factors contributing to poetic or stylistic choice in multilingual situations.
