In May 2008 you wrapped up more than six years of service as Japan's ambassador to the United States. During your time in that position we saw drastic changes in America's foreign policy. In an Asahi Shimbun interview (published May 28, 2008) you stated that the United States now finds itself in a difficult situation as a result of the active unilateralist stance it has taken since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
