Isi artikel
Previous studies of color naming have relied upon operational distinctions between "basic" and "secondary" color terms. This paper examines the linguistic justification for this distinction in an analysis of color naming by Sudanese school children in For and Arabic; and finds that the criteria for identifying basic terminology do not converge. Despite the variation in linguistic usage, the patterning of color categorization is shown to be consistent with universalist predictions about the relative salience of color categories.
