Isi artikel
In establishing cognates one should search for relevant phonological rules and consider their manner of interaction to produce surface forms rather than rely on the criterion of phonetic similarity as has been the practice among some Africanists in recent years. Two phonetically dissimilar forms are used to illustrate the need for this. First, the meanings of the constituent morphemes of these two dissimilar forms are established and a common underlying form posited for them. Then the underlying form is linked to the two surface forms by phonological rules.
