This paper presents and discusses evidence about a semantic change in progress. First, it shows how the meaning of shi fu, a Chinese term of address meaning worker in some sense, has been broadened recently in the People's Republic of China. Second, it shows how these changes also touch another major address term, tongzhi comrade, so that the two terms are involved in a push chain. Third, it presents empirical evidence to compare users of shi fu with those of tongzhi and especially to show how shi fu, as the main object of a language change in progress, has different meanings for different groups of speakers.Fourth, it shows how the changes affecting the two terms support several previous hypotheses about language change as well as suggests some additional ones. Finally, the paper provides evidence on the non-uniformity of linguistic norms across all members of a speech community. Since some type of change will always be present in any community, the implication of the variable data on shi fu reported here is that models of community grammars must consider differential speaker competence.
