Isi artikelThis paper refutes claims that (1) the preverbal particles de, bin, don, go, kom, and won/wan are markers of different tenses and aspects in Nigerian Pidgin because its verb form is invariant, and (2) that tense is an obligatory category. Our analysis shows that de, bin, don, and go are time markers, while kom and won/wan are serial verbs; that time is more consistently marked by a combination of the use of preverbal particles, context (and contextual clues), time adverbials, and the invariant verbs themselves. Tense, in its technical sense, is absent from the language.
