While PowerPoint is claimed to be useful tool and is widely used for teaching, it is also considered as ineffective as the most prominent feature is simply to present attention-grabbing visualization; it exhibits a visual treat for the students and promotes note taking instead of active participation. Especially in language classrooms, little that this attractiveness help students to learn and practice the language effectively without the teacher's careful and critical contemplations. the intent of this study is to investigate the problems of using PowerPoint in English language classrooms and how they should be best avoided. Five student teachers in a Micro Teaching class are observed mainly on how they utilize the PowerPoint to facilitate learning i.e. to help their students understand a certain language structures and practice it correspondingly. The observation shows that the Powerpoint is generally used as a presentation tool, similar to the common use in a business presentation where participants (audience/students) sit passively through a session. The teachers mostly read from slides, get closely attached to the computer, hence inhibiting classroom interaction. |
