“It’s (Being an) Academic” explores through poetry recent changes the author has encountered as an early career academic in an Australian university, including lack of financial support for the tertiary sector from government, the erosion of face-to-face contact with students, university emphasis on funded research, the valuing of quantitative research above qualitative research, and the push for academics to gain mainstream media exposure. The author-poet suggests that the acknowledgement of these issues is not enough; rather academics should take a stance and fight for a better tertiary environment.
