Few progressive educators doubt that the space for critical thinking in formal education is becoming more constrained as neoliberal and neoconservative forces of the new market-state are reforming education into a semiprivatized competitive system. This is especially so in England in primary, secondary, and community college/further education (FE), where the curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy are measured and subject to detailed inspection. In higher education (HE), where such measurement and inspection have not (yet) been instituted, there are still opportunities for critical thinking and critical hope that we, like Freire, believe are essential so future generations can develop alternatives to the current world order that threatens the survival of humanity.
