Isi artikelRitchie (1978) presented the results of an experiment which he claims strongly support the hypothesis that the principles of Universal Grammar (UG) are still available to adult second language learners. His paper has been widely referred to in the second language acquisition literature as having helped establish the truth of that hypothesis (c/. White, 1985). But given the results of recent experiments involving the same hypothesis (Schachter (1988a) for different results and BleyVroman, loup, Felix (1988) for equivocal results) it is time for a fresh look at this influential work. In the sections that follow I will address the following possibilities: (1) that the principle Ritchie used for his experiment is not an innate grammatical principle; (2) that there are methodological problems inherent in Ritchie's experimental design; and (3) that Ritchie's results are due to the effects of processing constraints, not to grammatical constraints.
