ABSTRACT
THE DESCRIPTION ABOUT MOTHERS SUFFERED FROM ANEMIA AT THIRD TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY AND LOW BIRTH BODY WEIGHTS AT ST.CAROLUS, JAKARTA, OCTOBER 2007 – MARCH 2008
JESSLYN VALENTINA JONATHAN and ELIZABETH CLARISSA

The anemia prevalence in the world has been very high, especially in developing countries including Indonesia. Anemia is a body condition which is indicated by size and number deficiencies of erythrocyte. In other words, the body does not have a sufficient content of hemoglobin for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the cells and blood. For pregnant women, anemia increases the frequency of complications during pregnancy and giving birth. The maternal death risk, number of prematurity, low birth body weight of newborn children, and prenatal death rate increase. Furthermore, the ante- and post- partum bleedings are more often found at women suffering from anemia and more likely to be fatal. Low birth body weight or Berat Badan Lahir Rendah (BBLR) children are newborn babies with the weight less than 2,500 grams regardless of the age of pregnancy. According to the timing of which the data are obtained, this study is retrospective. The design of this research used analytical-non experimental by observing 120 medical records of anemia-suffered pregnant women at third trimester. The research concludes that 52.5% of mothers who suffered from anemia at their third trimester of pregnancy gave birth to BBLR babies. From the 120 sample of anemia-suffered pregnant mothers, 45% have adequate intake status while 55% have inadequate intake status. 34.2% of mothers who suffered from anemia is 23-27 years old.
