Acute Respiratory Tract Infections (ARI) has still become the most dangerous infection disease in Indonesia. ARI incidence has reached almost the same rate in all over the world, which is 5-7 episodes /children/year in cities and 3-5 episodes /children/year in villages in one year. Data from Depkes has shown that the mortality rate of children under five years old in Indonesia caused by ARI was 20%-30% from total mortality in 1998.
The increase of ARI has been influenced by many factors, such as house physical sanitation condition and pollutant factors. Ventilation, temperature, humidity, natural lighting, cigar pollution inside the house, and fuel utility types are some conditions which were identified with this disease. Beside that, there are other factors like house density, mother’s behavior (bringing the children to the kitchen, immunization, consumption of vitamin A), and social-economy condition which were related to ARI.
The objective of this study is to analyze the relation between the physical sanitation condition and the other factors of Acute Respiratory Tract Infectious (ARI) disease incidence in children above one years old and under five years old. The study was conducted in Sukamana District, Kupang.
This study was analytical observational with cross–sectional approach. The population are all houses which had children above one years old and under five years old. The sample was three hundred (300) houses with baby inside which were taken random with Propotional Stratified Random Sampling.
The result showed that there were some correlation between house sanitation condition with Acute Respiratory Tract Infectious (ARI) in children above one years old and under five years old. The only one variable in sanitation condition which had correlation was ventilation (p=0,027), but temperature (p=1) and natural lighting (p=0,644) have no correlation. At all, the other factors like people’s density in house (p=0,032), mother’s behavior in bringing the children to the kitchen (p=0,037), cigar pollution inside the house (p=0,041), immunization (p=0,045) and social-economy (p=0,025) also have correlation with ARI. Based on this study, it can be concluded that variables related with Acute Respiratory Tract Infectious (ARI) disease are ventilation, people density in house, cigar pollution in house, mother’s behavior in bringing the children to the kitchen, immunization, and social-economy. It is recommended to improve house sanitation condition, to reduce the cigar pollution inside house for all of the families, and to arrange a health education about immunization and mother’s behavior which give bad impact to their children’s health.
