The history of longitudinal community studies in Africa attests to their value for demographic and health research, policy and practice and their resilience in the face of multiple challenges. This collection provides a comparative parameter for activity in the Asian Pacific region. The article discusses the contributions of longitudinal community studies to demographic surveillance and health research in Africa and considers the many chalengges faced when undertaking them in resource-poor saettings.
