Abstract
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is commonly used to study human migration. Island of Papua has been settled from 50.000 years ago by the Melanesian and there was a second wave migration by Austronesian speaking population. In this study Papuan genetic migration pattern was studied using D-loop region from mtDNA of 40 individuals of Sentani and Dani ethnics originally from Wamena population. Sentani ethnic lived on the north coast on contrary the Dani lived on the highland of Papua, thus the genetic pattern from these two populations expected to be different. The result shows that there are 40 mtDNA haplotypes which were classified into 4 haplogroups. Majorities (67%) of the haplogroups are P and Q exclusively found in Papua. Haplogroup B and E which belong to Austronesian motif could be found on Sentani population. The result suggests the presence of an admixture Austronesian and Melanesian genetic trail in the Sentani. The isolated Dani ethnic in Wamena has only Melanesian genetic trail.
