The objective of this work is to quantify the controllability of complex heat-integrated reactor. First, a systematic approach is proposed to model complex heat-integrated reactor schemes. As a simple measure, overall effectiveness is derived directly from the flowsheet. Several design parameters are studied and design heuristics are proposed to improve the controllability of heat-integration schemes. HDA example, are used to assess the controllability of different designs. Results show that, as opposed to one’s intuition, some of the complex heat-integrated reactor design alternatives are indeed more controllable than simpler heat-integration schemes.
