This paper presents a 3-DOF adaptive attitude control of a small model helicopter by using fuzzy-PID control scheme. The main contribution of this paper is to verify the effectiveness of an adaptive fuzzy tuning scheme to deal with the drawback of conventional PID controller, i.e., to reduce cross coupling effects and to overcome system uncertainties due to time-varying system parameters in the 3-DOF attitude control of a model helicopter in hover. By using real flight data, the system dynamics of a model helicopter on gimbal-stand is identified as a system consisting of 3-independent SISO subsystems. For each subsystem, Fuzzy-PID controllers are designed to reduce the degree of coupling effects effectively by tuning gains of PID controllers in adaptive manner. Experimental results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed attitude control scheme compared to conventiona PID and Fuzzy controller.
