In patients with jaundice and normal liver function, the cause of hyperbilirubinaemia is an isolated disorder of bilirubin metabolism. In patients with hyperbilirubinaemia who have abnormal liver enzyme levels, hepatocellular disease must be differentiated from cholestatic liver injury.
