Reading and rereading the other contributors' pieces as they evolved during the production of this Controversy, the question I found myself coming back to most frequently was the issue of how far whatever we may observe in experiments can genuinely inform the way we model economic behaviour or formulate economic policy in the wider world. Surely ± or so some sceptics would argue ± the principles or processes governing the allocation of scarce resources in the world outside the laboratory are so complex that nothing that experimental economists can do on their shoestring budgets is likely to come anywhere close to usefully mimicking that reality.
